Bhutan is one of the world’s most isolated nations, with deep valleys and dzongs perched on high peaks. The country has strictly controlled the number of tourists it allows in and zealously protects its rich history. Our Bhutan Druk path trek itinerary applies the service of an expert-speaking English guide on every day of trekking. With a private guide, it offers a unique experience on the tour.
One of Bhutan’s best short treks is the Druk Path Trek. The Bhutan Druk Path trek distance is 56 km. It links the valleys of Paro and Thimphu by following an ancient commercial route over high mountain passes. Besides that, the path winds through stunning high yak meadows, and rhododendron forests, and passes by lakes stocked with rainbow trout. The first part of the Bhutan Druk Path trek itinerary takes trekkers by the ruins of Jele Dzong, which is a fortress perched on top of a high grassland ridge, offering great views of Mt. Jomolhari to the north, and then via apple orchards and forests of pine.

On the route, we pass the villages of yak farmers, crystal-clear alpine lakes, and awesome views of the Himalayas, including mounts Jomolhari, Jichu Drake, and Gangkar Puensum along the Bhutan-Tibetan border. Then we drop down into pine and juniper-framed Thimphu, the capital of Bhutan, after going through Phadjoding Monastery. Bhutan Druk Path Trek Difficulty
This is a moderate holiday that we grade as moderate. The Bhutan Druk Path trek difficulty is an easy to moderate walk and relatively accessible. There are no long steep ascents, no scrambling, and no exposed paths. Because of the high altitude though, the Bhutan Druk Path trek difficulty level is assessed as moderate. You should be in good physical condition and have experience with multi-day mountain hiking before undertaking this trek.
Altitude Sickness During Trek
Traveling above 2,500 meters can result in altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness. Anyone, regardless of their physical fitness, may experience altitude sickness.
Those who have had altitude sickness before, who exercise or drink alcohol before acclimatizing, and those with preexisting respiratory problems are more prone. We recommend that you consult your doctor before the trek to seek advice specific to your medical requirements.
Some symptoms of altitude sickness can be:
- headache
- loss of appetite
- feeling or being sick
- feeling tired
- dizziness
- difficulty sleeping
If you experience any symptoms or discomfort, please inform the guides. We’ll adjust by adding extra acclimatization days or slowing the trek pace based on your condition.
Altitude sickness is a genuine risk during Himalayan treks. However, it’s preventable. You can avoid altitude sickness by:
- Ascend slowly
- Don’t drink alcohol during the trek
- Stay hydrated
- Use medications
- Eat a healthy diet, especially plenty of carbs
