Everest Base Camp Trek Route

Our nearly two-week teahouse Everest Base Camp trek itinerary starts with an exciting flight to Lukla. We begin our EBC trek in the peaceful village of Phakding, where we stay overnight. The next day, we continue to the bustling Everest gateway of Namche, where we experience local life. Along the hike, we engage with friendly locals and gain insights into the local culture along our EBC trek Itinerary. In spring, you’ll see Everest expeditions preparing. Climbing Kalapathar at 5545m is a tough challenge, but the rewards are incredible.

Everest Base Camp Trek with Kalapathar

Our trek finishes at Gorakshep, the final stop before Everest Base Camp. At an elevation of 5,364 meters (17,598 feet), Gorakshep is the starting point for the ascent to Base Camp. We summit Everest Base Camp from there on foot and return to Gorak Shep afterward. The Dalai Lama referred to it as “the steps to heaven.” Our EBC trek ends here, with a hike to Kala Patthar (5,545 m, 18,192 ft) for a special view of Everest. The following day, we descend to Lukla via Pheriche, Namche Bazaar, and Phakding.

Trek Difficulty

The Everest Base Camp Trek difficulty is considered moderate. It requires 6-7 hours of hiking daily. You’ll navigate steep terrain, both uphill and downhill, along narrow and rugged paths as you reach about 5500m. Proper preparation is crucial for the EBC trek. Even beginners in reasonably good physical condition can complete the EBC Trek with our gentle acclimatization routine and expert guidance from Alliance Trek. Our guides hike alongside you, ensuring regular breaks and hydration as you ascend on this Everest Base Camp Trek Itinerary. They’re also first-aid trained and cater to all your needs for a fulfilling EBC Trek. Regular cardio exercises like walking and running at home will help build endurance for this adventure.

Altitude Sickness During Trek

Traveling to elevations above 2,500 meters can pose a risk of altitude sickness, also known as acute mountain sickness (AMS). Altitude sickness can affect anyone, regardless of physical fitness. Individuals with a history of altitude sickness, those who exercise or drink alcohol before acclimatizing, and those with respiratory disorders are at higher risk. We recommend consulting your doctor before confirming the trek for advice tailored to your medical needs. Some symptoms of altitude sickness can be:
  • headache
  • loss of appetite
  • feeling or being sick
  • feeling tired
  • dizziness
  • difficulty sleeping
If you experience any symptoms or discomfort, please inform the guides. We’ll adjust by adding extra acclimatization days or slowing the trek pace based on your condition. Altitude sickness is a genuine risk during Himalayan treks. However, it’s preventable. You can avoid altitude sickness by:
  • Ascend slowly
  • Don’t drink alcohol during the trek
  • Stay hydrated
  • Use medications
  • Eat a healthy diet, especially plenty of carbs
