Mount Kailash & Lake Mansarovar: The Journey That Rewrote Our Souls

Kailash Mansarovar Yatra: A Personal Travel Story by Denis & Roger (Switzerland)

Some journeys are measured in kilometers, marked by the passing of signposts and the stamps in a passport. Others can only be measured by the quiet, permanent shift they leave in your heart.

In May 2026, we left the familiar, structured peaks of Switzerland for the wild, spiritual heart of Tibet. What we expected was an incredible alpine adventure; what we got was a profound awakening. This is the story of our pilgrimage to Mount Kailash and Lake Mansarovar—a journey that changed us forever. This tour was organized and planned by Mr. Kishor from Nepal Tours Packages.

I am frequent traveller and visit Nepal and South Asia part many times earlier. I love to organize my travel plans with Kishor as he understand my requirements and always open to help for customize tours. We earlier did Nepal Bhutan tour Packages, Everest Base Camp, Annapurna Circuit and Nepal Bhutan Tibet tour with Nepal tours Packages but in Tibet it was Tibet Overland tour featuring Lhasa and area. This time I was very keen to explore Mount Kailash and Mansarovar area.

At Dirapuk

The Call of the Sacred Pyramid

For years, Mount Kailash was nothing more than a myth captured on glossy pages and glowing screens. We had stared at photos of its impossibly perfect, four-sided pyramid peak, reading accounts of pilgrims who spoke of its magnetic, almost otherworldly energy. As Swiss hikers, we are no strangers to mountains. Yet, Kailash felt different. It wasn’t a peak to be conquered; it was a presence to be answered.

On May 9, 2026, alongside an incredible local expedition team from Nepal, our dream transitioned from a distant map to the dusty reality of the road.

Entering the Silent Kingdom: The Road to Tibet

Crossing the border from Nepal into Tibet felt less like crossing a political boundary and more like stepping through a portal to another dimension.

Route: Kathmandu ➔ Kerung ➔ Saga ➔ Lake Mansarovar ➔ Darchen ➔ Mount Kailash Kora ➔ Kathmandu

Almost instantly, the lush, humid green valleys of Nepal fell away. In their place rose the high-altitude desert of the Tibetan Plateau—an immense, raw landscape stretching endlessly beneath a sky so blue it seemed painted.

As we drove deeper into western Tibet, a profound silence settled over us. It wasn’t the empty silence of loneliness, but a rich, heavy stillness that invited us to look inward. In the modern world, we constantly drown out our thoughts. Here, in the vastness of the plateau, there was nowhere to hide from them.

The Liquid Turquoise of Lake Mansarovar

Our first glimpse of Lake Mansarovar felt like a hallucination.

Sitting at over 4,500 meters, the lake lay before us like a giant sheet of polished turquoise glass, perfectly mirroring the snow-dusted Gurla Mandhata range. There was no wind. The water didn’t ripple; it shimmered.

Along the rocky shoreline, we watched pilgrims. Some were deep in meditation, their faces softened by peace. Others prostrated on the damp earth, while some simply stood, weeping silently. Without speaking a word, Roger and I sat down on the rocks. Time simply dissolved. In that moment, Mansarovar wasn’t just a body of water—it was an anchor of absolute serenity.

The Unveiling of the King

The next day, as our vehicle bumped along the dusty road to Darchen, the chatter inside suddenly died.

Through the dust-streaked window, it appeared.

Mount Kailash.

Standing completely isolated, its black rock and white snow-ice contours towered over the surrounding landscape like a colossal, natural temple. Photographs do this mountain a massive disservice. They capture its shape, but they cannot capture its gravitas. It feels alive, watching, commanding an ancient and instinctual respect. Our hearts raced not from the altitude, but from the sheer awe of finally standing in its shadow.

The Sacred Kora: Walking Among the Devout

The Kora—the 52-kilometer circumambulation around the base of Mount Kailash—is where the physical challenge truly began.

Day 1: Dirapuk and the North Face

Our first day of walking towards Dirapuk Monastery was deceptively gentle. The valley floor opened up, and with every bend, Kailash grew larger, dominating the horizon.

We walked alongside Tibetan pilgrims spinning prayer wheels, Indian yatris chanting under their breath, and travelers from every corner of the globe. We didn’t share a native language, but language wasn’t necessary. A shared smile, a nod of encouragement when the climb grew steep, a shared cup of warm butter tea—these became our universal dialect. We were all walking the same path, carrying our own silent prayers.

Face-to-Face with the North Face

Reaching Dirapuk brought us face-to-face with the sheer, vertical North Face of Kailash. That evening, as the setting sun painted the summit in hues of brilliant gold and deep amber, we sat in absolute silence. No cameras. No phones. Just two friends from Switzerland, utterly humbled by the scale of the universe.

Charan Sparsha: A Touch of the Divine

One of the most intensely emotional detours of our journey was trekking up to Charan Sparsha (the “touching of the feet” of Kailash). Standing right at the base of this colossal wall of rock and ice, engulfed in a silence so deep you could hear your own heartbeat, was an experience that defies vocabulary. It is the emotional epicenter of the entire pilgrimage—a place where the thin veil between the physical and the spiritual seems to vanish entirely.

The Crucible: Dolma La Pass (5,630m)

If Day One was about beauty, Day Two was about endurance. The ascent to Dolma La Pass at 5,630 meters is where the mountain tests your resolve.

The air here is brutally thin. Every step felt as though we were moving through wet cement; every breath required a conscious, deliberate effort. Your lungs scream for oxygen, and your mind begs you to stop.

Step. Breathe. Pause. Step.

Reaching the summit of Dolma La was not a moment of triumph over nature—it was a triumph over our own limitations. Standing at the crest, enveloped in a kaleidoscope of thousands of fluttering, colorful prayer flags carrying the hopes of millions into the wind, we let go.

Around us, the scene was raw and incredibly human. Hardened climbers were weeping openly. Pilgrims were offering prayers of deepest gratitude. We held hands, took a deep breath of the freezing air, and felt an overwhelming wave of thankfulness just to be alive.

Returning Changed: The Final Day

As we completed the final leg of the Kora and walked back into Darchen on the third day, our bodies were exhausted, our muscles ached, and our faces were wind-burnt. Yet, our spirits felt incredibly light.

We realized we weren’t the same men who had set out three days prior. The mountain had stripped away the superficial anxieties of our daily lives and replaced them with something lasting:

  • Humility in the face of nature’s grandeur.
  • Gratitude for the simple gift of breath.
  • Perspective on what truly matters in life.

Hard-Earned Wisdom: Tips for Your Yatra

For those who feel the pull of Mount Kailash, this journey requires meticulous preparation of both body and mind. Here is what we learned on the trail:

  • Acclimatize Relentlessly: Do not rush. Spend extra days in Kathmandu or on the drive up to let your body adapt to the extreme altitude.
  • The “Slow-Motion” Rule: Walk at a pace that feels almost too slow. This is a spiritual pilgrimage, not a marathon. Save your energy.
  • Hydration is Your Lifeline: Drink at least 4 to 5 liters of water daily. It keeps altitude sickness at bay and keeps your muscles functioning.
  • Prepare for All Four Seasons: Even in May, temperatures can plunge from sunburn-warm during the day to well below freezing at night. Layers are non-negotiable.
  • Find the Right Guides: A flawless journey is impossible without a dedicated local team. Our Nepalese guides handled the nightmare of permits, border crossings, and high-altitude logistics, letting us focus entirely on the spiritual experience.
  • Pack Mental Resilience: You will face basic toilets, freezing nights, and physical exhaustion. Let go of expectations of luxury and embrace the simplicity.

Our Final Thoughts

Back home in Switzerland, surrounded by the familiar comforts of our daily routines, friends often ask us: “Was it worth it?”

Our response is always an immediate, heartfelt “Absolutely.”

Mount Kailash is not just a destination on a map; it is a profound internal shift. Long after the dust has been washed from our boots and our photos are tucked into albums, the essence of the journey remains. We still hear the snap of prayer flags in the freezing wind, see the turquoise mirror of Mansarovar, and feel the comforting silence of the sacred mountain.

Some travels end when you board the flight home. But the journey of Mount Kailash? That is a journey that continues quietly inside you for the rest of your life.
